strike one!

Posted by duncan.

Went on strike yesterday, for the first time. Picket line and all, though that part was only planned to be for about 45 minutes. But today, back at work, the union requested that all union members, each one individually, email the Vice Chancellor with our thoughts about her last pay offer... So I did:

Greetings,
I write to provide some constructive feedback on the most recent offer you made to university staff, now that staff have returned to work today, after the strike action yesterday.

I was pleased that you were willing to make an initial positive move towards a MECA in your offer yesterday. However, it was disappointing that the university was only willing to support a MECA if it was likely to lead to a significant increase in Government funding for the sector. An unwillingness to consider a MECA, even if it were cost-neutral, is disappointing to me as a staff member and also to other union members.

It is also encouraging that you reported a willingness to examine ways to improve the offer Massey was making to staff, noting that it was the lowest in the sector. As you will appreciate, it is difficult for staff to make decisions however without more specific information on what this might involve.

I encourage you in your leadership of the university as we all move forward together to find positive solutions to our mutual arrangements.

Warm regards,
Duncan Babbage

Fight the good fight, comrades!
